In Loving Memory of Chiquita

2010-2024

Chiquita was a little pig with big pig energy.  Arriving at Heaven on Earth in May 2023, she was one of the earliest residents to call the sanctuary home. She was accompanied by her chosen family; Jethro, Hannah and Phyllis and once they arrived on the island, there was no doubts they were at their final home.

Chiquita was a senior lady who has advanced arthritis. We knew she would not be with us for long, but the goal is always quality over quantity, and she dove headfirst into that goal.  Those who knew Chiquita say she β€œaged backwards”.  She loved her big grassy pasture where she could explore amongst the trees, root in the dirt or nap in the sunshine. She would actually run for her meals and enjoy every bite. She had a new lease on life!

β€œSassy” is probably the best word to describe Chiquita.  Although the smallest, she was clearly the queen of the pasture, and she was unapologetically herself.  She did not give her friendship freely, you had to earn it.  Trust usually came with time, and you knew you were accepted when you were rewarded with a belly flop. Once you became part of her family, you were gifted with just how sweet and loyal Chiquita could be. She was incredibly  vocal and would always let you know what she thought of whatever was going on, and she had the most expressive eyes that stared directly into your soul.

Chiquita began to slow down quite a bit as the days grew colder.  She still spent her nights snuggled with Hannah and Phyllis and spent days in the yard with her buddy Jethro and enjoying the company of her beloved caregivers.  Then the time that none of us wanted to come seemed to sneak upon us.  Chiquita’s mobility reached the point where she could no longer bear weight on her front legs.  The medication was not enough, and our girl told us she was tired and ready to rest.  Following a big breakfast of grain and Cheerios (hold the healthy veggies, please.) we helped Chiquita make her way on to her next journey.

Chiquita was loved & cherished by her pig and human family and will always be a part of all of us at Heaven on Earth.
