In Loving Memory of Betty

2019-2024

Betty, Black Betty, Betty Davis, Femme Fatale; all silly nicknames given to one sheep with so much personality.  It feels wrong to mourn an individual whose very presence defined celebration, who loved life and enjoyed everyone she encountered, but we mourn the absence of this joy.

Betty arrived at Heaven on Earth Animal Retirement Sanctuary in February of 2024.  She had been rescued from severe neglect, rehabilitated and came to live out her life in peace with her family.

Betty was a social butterfly who had so many friends, both human and animal.  Watson adored her, she was Trinity’s protector, she was MaeBelle’s best frenemy.  She had such a feminine presence that all the boys were smitten by her, and she loved their male energy in return.    At the same time, she was quite protective of the girls and kept everyone in line around her squad. Her herd bonds were incredibly strong. This went for her human herd bonds as well. She greeted guests without fail, enjoyed spending time with the sanctuary team and always gifted caregiver Kayla with zoomies while she cleaned the barn.  Betty was fully present any time she was with you. She would melt into snuggles and ensure both parties were completely engaged. She looked at you and let out that deep gravelly β€œBaaaaa” as if to say, β€œI’m ready to be adored now.”…and she was certainly adored.

We lost Betty on November 4.  She had been fighting her way back from Sheep Polio, but despite being incredibly resilient and determined, her body could simply not win the battle. Years of neglect in her past likely contributed to her inability to make a comeback regardless of how determined a lady she was.

Betty’s absence at Heaven on Earth is palpable.  Her presence was so big, and her energy reflected pure love. Her sheep & human herd have been navigating a new normal without her here, though we know Betty will always be with us ensuring we fully commit to a snuggle while snacking on saltines.  She introduced countless people to the wonder and beauty of sheep and allowed them to see what fabulous individuals they are.  For that, we are all grateful and commit to continue to share her message of love and joy.

Betty loved to dance and play!
